Why Density Changes Teaspoon Mass
See why equal teaspoon volumes can contain different milligram masses and why powders need extra care.
Imagine filling identical teaspoons with two different materials. The spoon volume stays the same, but the milligram result can change because density changes.
Density means mass per volume
A density of 1.2 g/mL means every milliliter has a mass of 1.2 grams under the stated conditions. A density of 0.8 g/mL means the same volume has less mass.
For one US teaspoon:
- At
0.8 g/mL, the mass is approximately3,943.14 mg. - At
1.0 g/mL, the mass is approximately4,928.92 mg. - At
1.2 g/mL, the mass is approximately5,914.71 mg.
The teaspoon volume did not change. Only density changed.
Liquids and powders behave differently
Liquid density can vary with temperature and composition. Powder measurements introduce additional variation because loose, sifted, leveled, and packed samples may have different bulk densities.
This is why an ingredient name alone may not guarantee an exact milligram result. Use a defensible density source and treat bulk-density calculations as approximations.
Match the units
